Cox and Box

Cox and Box

Grosvenor Light Opera Company presents:

With lyrics by F. C. Burnand, music by Arthur Sullivan

and based on the farce Box and Cox by John Maddison Morton

An unscrupulous landlord, Sergeant Bouncer, has hit on a capital plan for maximising his income:  he rents out his spare room both to Mr. Cox, who works all day for a hatter and doesn’t come home till night, and to Mr. Box, who works all night at a newspaper printer’s and doesn’t come home till morning.  So Sergeant Bouncer gets double rent for his room, and neither of his tenants is any the wiser!  What could possibly go wrong?!

Fast-paced, funny and frivolous, this under-performed gem of the Victorian stage represents Arthur Sullivan’s first foray into composing comic opera, before his celebrated partnership with W. S. Gilbert.  For G&S afficionados, this is a rare opportunity to see the full original version of Cox and Box, including songs and dialogue which were cut from the more familiar abridged Savoy edition that entered the repertoire of the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company.

Grosvenor Light Opera Company is one of London’s leading amateur operatic societies and has staged over 70 productions of Gilbert and Sullivan’s operas.  In 2013 GLOC made their debut at the International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival in Buxton with Patience and have since been invited back to perform The Mikado at the Festival in Harrogate in 2014.
