Crime

Crime

***** ’BÉZNÄ‚ Theatre...have produced a visceral, deeply satisfying and beguiling work.’ - Views from the Gods on Deathwatch.

’YOU TELL ME, IS THERE SOME SOCIETY YOU KNOW OF THAT DOESN’T RUN ON GREED? WHAT IS GREED? LISTEN. A REFORMED FREE MARKET ECONOMY NEVER PROMISED TO BANISH CRIME. WE HAVE NO RESPONSIBILITY OVER THE MANIACS, THE PSYCHOPATHS AND MURDERERS OUT THERE ON THE STREETS.’

Welfare is cut. The unemployed man steals. The single mother sells her child. The student murders the pawnbroker. Which is the crime: the desperate acts of the destitute or the capitalist policies which disregard those who cannot keep up in the race?

Inspired by the writings of Milton Friedman, Naomi Klein and written as a contemporary response to ’Crime and Punishment’ by Dostoevsky, CRIME dramatises the direct link between the rise in lawlessness and the economic changes which benefit only those who are already rich. In the epic form of seven scenes and four songs, BÉZNÄ‚ Theatre’s new play is uncompromisingly relevant today.

Written and directed by Nico Vaccari, BÉZNÄ‚ Theatre’s all male production exposes the ever-growing gap between the interests of the leaders and the needs of the people.
